Open — Open year-round. Cabins and lodges available for rent daily. Visitor center and gift shop open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, cabins require a six-night minimum stay with specific check-in days, reduced to four nights three months out and two nights in the final month. Two-night minimum applies rest of year.

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, James River State Park provides comfortable cabin and lodge accommodations with modern conveniences in a peaceful natural setting. The park features 14 two-bedroom cabins sleeping up to six guests, 2 three-bedroom cabins sleeping up to eight, and 2 six-bedroom lodges accommodating up to 16 people. Each dwelling includes a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, coffeemaker, and cookware, plus heating and air conditioning, fireplace (gas logs in lodges), and a wrap-around deck with rocking chairs. The park encompasses 1,561 acres with rolling grasslands, quiet forests, and 3 miles of James River shoreline. Guests enjoy free boat launching, 22 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and biking, a universally accessible fishing pier, and proximity to excellent smallmouth bass fishing. The park earned International Dark Sky Park designation in 2019, making it ideal for stargazing. Additional facilities include a visitor center with gift shop and coffee bar, picnic shelters, a natural playground, and interpretive programs offered weekends. James River operates as a trash-in, trash-out facility with collection sites provided.
