About

Canoe Landing Campground is the only waterfront campground at James River State Park, offering primitive camping directly along the banks of the James River. The campground features 10 tent-only sites nestled beneath large shade trees, providing a quiet and scenic retreat for paddlers and nature enthusiasts. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring, with parking conveniently located adjacent to sites. The campground emphasizes a peaceful experience without generators or RV traffic. Campers can park kayaks and canoes right at the river's edge in front of their sites. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with frequent eagle sightings along the river corridor. Vault toilets are available on-site, though campers must bring their own drinking water as none is available at the campground. James River State Park is located approximately 40 miles northeast of Lynchburg and 95 miles west of Richmond. The park offers additional amenities including hiking trails, fishing, and a canoe livery for river trips. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made through reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK.
