Horseshoe Campground

Open — Open annually from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. Closed for the winter season.

Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 2:03PM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA

2:03 PM — April 13th, 1:00 AM

The combination of 10 hour fuel moistures around 7 to 10 percent, relative humidities around 25 to 30 percent, and wind gusts around 20 to 25 mph will lead to an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires on Monday. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website. About

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains at James River State Park, Horseshoe Campground caters specifically to equestrian campers. The facility offers 9 pull-through sites designed to accommodate trailers up to 40 feet in length, with the unique feature of allowing two trailers to share a common area between them. Each site includes water and electric hookups with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp outlets, a fire-ring grill, picnic table, and lantern hanger. The campground provides 20 covered horse stalls where horses must be kept overnight, and campers can purchase pine shaving bedding at the contact station or visitor center. Rakes and wheelbarrows are available on-site. The campground includes a full-service bathhouse with four unisex hot showers, one of which is wheelchair-accessible. A dump station is available free to overnight guests. From the campground, riders have access to 22 miles of multi-use trails for bridle use, though horses are not permitted to access the river. The park operates as a trash-in, trash-out facility to minimize debris and wildlife impact. State law requires visitors to carry a copy of a current negative Coggins report for each horse brought to the park.
