Open — The park is open daily from dawn to dusk. Primitive campgrounds are available year-round, while the Red Oak Campground with electric and water hookups operates from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December.

About

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Buckingham County, James River State Park spans 1,561 acres of rolling grasslands, quiet forests, and 3 miles of historic James River shoreline. The park offers diverse camping options including primitive riverside sites at the canoe landing area and developed campgrounds with electric and water hookups. Visitors can enjoy 22 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and biking, excellent smallmouth bass fishing, and paddling opportunities on the James River. The park earned International Dark Sky Park designation in 2019, making it ideal for stargazing. Facilities include a visitor center, gift shop, natural playground, universally accessible fishing pier, and boat launches. James River operates as a trash-in, trash-out facility to minimize environmental impact.

Directions

From U.S. 60 West, turn right onto Route 605 (Riverside Dr.) at the James River Bridge. Travel seven miles, then turn left onto Route 606. The park is located at 104 Green Hill Drive, Gladstone, VA 24553.
