Canoe Landing Campground
Open — Open year-round with site-specific reservations. The park operates from dawn to dusk daily. Red Oak Campground facilities including full-service bathhouse and laundry are open March through early December, though Canoe Landing operates year-round with primitive restrooms.
Special Weather Statement issued March 29 at 2:53AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA
The combination of afternoon relative humidity values between 17 and 25 percent, winds gusting between 15 mph and 25 mph, and very dry fuels will lead to an increased risk for wildfires throughout much of Virginia and southeast West Virginia today. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Please remember to obey local burn bans. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state forestry or environmental protection website.
About
Canoe Landing Campground is a primitive tent-only campground located along the scenic banks of the James River at James River State Park in Buckingham County, Virginia. The campground features 10 primitive riverside sites positioned to the left of the canoe launch when facing the river, providing direct access to the James River for paddlers and anglers. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring under large shade trees, though sites do not have tent pads, electricity, or water hookups. The campground is rooftop tent friendly, though it offers limited anchoring ability for hammocks. Parking is available at each campsite for convenience. The campground provides primitive restrooms, and potable water is available at four of the park's five picnic shelters located elsewhere in the park. A group camping site accommodating up to 42 people is also available near the canoe landing area. James River State Park is designated as an International Dark Sky Park, making it ideal for stargazing. The park operates as a trash-in, trash-out facility, with trash collection sites located at the canoe landing campground and other designated areas. The park offers 22 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and biking, and the James River is renowned for smallmouth bass fishing.
