About

Unity Lake State Recreation Site sits as a verdant contrast to the surrounding high desert landscape of eastern Oregon, where the Burnt River is impounded by Unity Dam to create Unity Reservoir. The campground's cool grass and mature trees offer respite from the sagebrush and cheatgrass of the bordering lands, with the fragrant smell of juniper filling the air. The recreation site features 35 electrical sites with water hookups available on a first-come, first-served basis, plus two cabins that can be reserved in advance. The reservoir provides year-round fishing opportunities, with spring and fall being prime seasons for rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and black crappie. A boat ramp accommodates both anglers and water skiers during warmer months, while winter brings ice fishing opportunities. A nature trail winds through the area past ponds, offering wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. Located approximately 50 miles east of John Day in Malheur County, Unity Lake serves as an excellent base for exploring nearby historical sites including the Sumpter Valley Dredge and accessing wilderness areas like the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. The park's day-use area features expansive grassy spaces with shade trees, making it popular for picnicking and relaxation in the high desert.
