About
Yellow Pine Campground is the largest of three Wallowa-Whitman National Forest campgrounds situated along Highway 26, which forms part of the Journey Through Time Scenic Byway. Named for the large old-growth ponderosa ("yellow") pines that shade the area, this 21-site campground serves as a convenient overnight stop for travelers crossing eastern Oregon between Unity and John Day. The campground accommodates both tents and small trailers, with five sites designed for ADA accessibility. Each campsite features a picnic table, fire ring, and parking space. Vault toilets are provided, but campers must bring their own drinking water as no potable water is available on site. Popular activities include picnicking, birding, wildlife viewing, and photography. An accessible barrier-free trail leads from Yellow Pine to nearby Wetmore Campground, where hikers can enjoy wildflowers and old-growth ponderosa forest. The campground sees moderate use and provides a peaceful setting among the pines at approximately 4,900 feet elevation.
Directions
From Unity, Oregon, head west on Highway 26 for 10.5 miles towards Prairie City and John Day. The campground entrance is on the right side of the highway.
