About
Short Creek Guard Station is a historic Forest Service cabin situated in a corner of a small meadow surrounded by tall ponderosa pines at approximately 5,000 feet elevation. A creek runs alongside the cabin, which serves as an excellent base for exploring the nearby Monument Rock and Strawberry Mountain wilderness areas and the North Fork of the Malheur Scenic River. The cabin provides comfortable amenities and sleeps 2 to 3 people. During the summer season, drinking water is available on-site. The location offers access to over a hundred miles of trails in the wilderness areas, ranging from moderate trails near the cabin to rugged backcountry routes. The diverse ecological makeup includes five of seven major life zones in North America. Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant, with elk, deer, antelope, black bears, bighorn sheep, grouse, and numerous bird species inhabiting the area. The riparian habitat of the North Fork Malheur Scenic River provides excellent fishing and picnicking opportunities. The cabin is located about 38 miles from John Day, Oregon, accessed via Forest Road 13.
