Elk Creek Campground

Closed — Closed for winter due to snow. The campground is typically accessible from late spring through fall, weather permitting. Forest Road 13 becomes impassable during winter months.

Alcohol Prohibitions

This Order describes acts that are prohibited upon lands, roads and trails within the National Forest System administered by the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region in regards to alcoholic beverages.

Aquatic Invasive Species

This Order prohibits 1) possessing, storing, or transporting any aquatic invasive animal species AND 2) prohibits possessing, storing, or transporting any aquatic or riparian invasive plant species - on National Forest System lands in the Pacific Northwest Region as specified in the Order.

Restrictions on Use of Forage and Mulch Products

This Order prohibits unloading, storing, or using any straw, hay, grain, seed, or other forage or mulch products that are not state-certified weed free on the National Forest System lands, roads or trails in any Closure Area as specific in the Order.

Malheur Falls Post Fire Hazards Closure

Prohibitions1.   Entering into or being upon an area closed for the protection of public health and safety. 36 CFR § 261.53(e).2.   Being on a National Forest System Road. 36 CFR § 261.54(c) and (e).

14 Day Stay Limit

Prohibition of Camping on the Umatilla, Wallowa-Whitman, and Malheur National Forests for a period longer than 14 days within any 30-day period. 36 CFR § 261.58(a)

Located near the North Fork Malheur Wild and Scenic River in the Malheur National Forest, Elk Creek Campground offers a rustic camping experience for those seeking solitude and outdoor recreation. This small campground is particularly popular during hunting seasons, attracting visitors pursuing Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer in the surrounding forest. The campground provides basic amenities including vault toilets, but campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. Fire pits and picnic tables are provided at campsites. The location offers excellent stream fishing opportunities in the nearby river and easy access to the surrounding forest for hunting and wildlife viewing. Easy to reach during summer months via Forest Road 13, the campground becomes inaccessible during winter due to snow. Visitors should practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or reservations required, and is limited to a 14-day consecutive stay.

Directions

From Prairie City, turn onto South Main Street to Bridge Street, turn left. Follow Bridge Street past the cemetery; it becomes County Road 62. Continue approximately 8 miles to Forest Road 13, turn left. Follow Forest Road 13 for approximately 22 miles; the campground will be on the right.
