About

North Fork Malheur Campground is a primitive, 5-site campground located along the Wild and Scenic North Fork Malheur River in the Malheur National Forest. This remote campground serves as an excellent base camp for hunters, anglers, and hikers seeking a quiet escape in northeastern Oregon's Blue Mountains. The campground offers basic amenities including extended concrete picnic tables, raised fire rings, compacted dirt and gravel parking areas for tents and trailers, and vault toilets with compacted gravel/concrete approaches. No potable water is available, so visitors must bring their own. The North Fork Malheur River provides excellent fishing opportunities for Rainbow Trout, and the North Fork Malheur Trailhead is located within a half mile of the campground, offering access to the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. Access to the campground requires traveling approximately 34 miles from Prairie City via County Road 62, Forest Road 16, and Forest Road 1675. The road is quite rough and becomes very muddy after periods of rain, making access challenging during wet weather. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees and no reservation system.

Directions

From Prairie City, turn onto South Main Street. Follow to the junction with Bridge Street and turn left. Continue past the cemetery where the road becomes County Road 62. Follow County Road 62 approximately 20 miles to the junction with Forest Road 16, turn east. Follow Forest Road 16 for approximately 12 miles to the junction with Forest Road 1675 on the right. Follow Forest Road 1675 for approximately 2 miles to the campground. The road is rough and becomes very muddy after rain.
