About
Union Bay Modern Campground is the primary developed camping facility in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Michigan's largest state park. The campground features 100 sites with electrical service spread across an open field layout, with limited vegetative screening between sites. Twenty-nine premium sites are situated directly along Lake Superior's Union Bay shoreline, where campers can hear waves crashing on the rocky shore. The remaining sites occupy the interior of the campground. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the park's 60,000 acres of old-growth forest, scenic waterfalls including Lake of the Clouds, and 90 miles of hiking trails. On-site amenities include modern flush toilet and shower buildings, a sanitation station with potable water, a boat launch accessing Lake Superior, an accessible fishing pier, a playground, and a camp store offering camping supplies, gifts, and canoe/kayak rentals during the operating season. A sandy beach is located within walking distance along Highway M-107. Check-in is at 3:00 p.m. at the Union Bay Campground Office during the operating season. The visitor center, located near the junction of South Boundary Road and M-107, provides interpretive exhibits, trail information, and Wi-Fi. The park offers exceptional opportunities for hiking, fishing, paddling, and experiencing the rugged beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula wilderness.
