About
Black River Harbor Campground sits along Lake Superior in the Black River Harbor Recreation Area of Ottawa National Forest. The campground features 39 paved sites that can accommodate tents, trailers, and motorhomes, with seven sites offering Lake Superior overlooks. Each site is bordered by vegetation for privacy and includes a fire ring and picnic table. Twenty-three sites are reservable while sixteen operate first-come first-served. The location provides exceptional access to outdoor recreation. A boat ramp offers access to Lake Superior for fishing and boating, while a historic suspension bridge leads to half a mile of natural shoreline for swimming. The Black River features five waterfalls accessible via short trails, and the North Country Trail passes through the recreation area. The harbor area includes a historic CCC-built pavilion and large picnic areas. Originating in Wisconsin, the Black River flows through forests of pine, hemlock and hardwood before dropping in elevation through a series of scenic waterfalls to meet Lake Superior. The tannin from hemlock trees gives the river its distinctive dark color. The area offers fishing for lake trout, coho salmon, steelhead, walleye, bass, and panfish.
