About
Twin Springs Campground sits within the 47,000-acre Curlew National Grassland in southeastern Idaho, near the Idaho-Utah border. This primitive camping area holds historical significance as a major stopping point along the California Gold Rush trail after Hudspeth's Cutoff was established in 1849. During wet seasons, this was one of the few reliable water sources for travelers over a 22-mile stretch. The surrounding landscape is characteristic of high desert terrain, with open grasslands dotted with sagebrush at approximately 4,700 feet elevation. While the area may appear desolate, it supports diverse wildlife and is recognized as one of Idaho's premier birding destinations. Visitors can spot species including Sage Thrasher, Vesper Sparrow, Brewer's Sparrow, Ash-throated Flycatcher, and Scott's Oriole. The Curlew National Grassland offers year-round recreation opportunities including fishing at nearby Stone Reservoir for crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, rainbow trout, and smallmouth bass. The area is also popular for wildlife observation, photography, and hunting. Natural shade is very limited throughout the grassland, so visitors should come prepared for sun exposure.
