Massacre Rocks State Park sits along the mighty Snake River in southeastern Idaho, offering a unique blend of Oregon Trail history and outdoor recreation. The park's 42-site campground provides electric and water hookups, modern restrooms with hot showers, and a dump station. Four heated and air-conditioned cabins sleeping up to five people provide year-round lodging options. The park preserves significant Oregon Trail history, including Register Rock where emigrants inscribed their names during westward journeys. Visible wagon ruts and interpretive exhibits in the visitor center tell the story of the 1862 emigrant skirmish that gave the park its name. The landscape itself reveals dramatic geological history, shaped by the prehistoric Bonneville Flood that carved massive boulders throughout the area. Recreation opportunities include 7.5 miles of hiking and biking trails through sagebrush and juniper, rock climbing routes, river access for boating and fishing, and a challenging 18-hole disc golf course known for narrow fairways and elevation changes. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with opportunities to spot pelicans, red-winged blackbirds, antelope, and other species. The park operates year-round with the Upper Loop campground and cabins available during winter months.
