Curlew Campground

Closed

Currently closed for the off-season. Peak season with full services opens late May through early September. During peak season, sites are available through Recreation.gov or first-come, first-served. Off-season camping is free but has no water or toilet services.

About

Curlew Campground is situated in Curlew National Grassland at 4,700 feet elevation, adjacent to Stone Reservoir. The surrounding area is an open desert environment dotted with sagebrush and very few trees, with mowed lawn areas within the campground. Natural shade is limited, though most individual sites have small picnic shelters. The grassland offers exceptional year-round birding with species including Sage Thrasher, Ferruginous Hawk, Mountain Bluebird, and Sharp-tailed grouse best viewed in March and April. Stone Reservoir provides fishing for rainbow trout, bass, perch, and crappie, along with swimming opportunities. The reservoir is closed to all motorized watercraft due to invasive species concerns. Mountain biking and OHV riding are permitted on designated trails. The campground features 14 individual campsites and one large group site accommodating up to 200 people. Site 14 is ADA accessible with a cement pad and paved parking spur. Amenities during peak season include vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills at each site. The group site includes picnic shelters and horseshoe pits. Horses are not permitted within the campground, though horseback riding is allowed on the surrounding open range.
