About

Malad Summit Campground is located at 6,100 feet elevation next to Mill Creek in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, just 14 miles north of Malad, Idaho. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s, the campground offers a peaceful retreat in a dense forest of maple trees that provide plentiful shade, with stately Douglas fir trees dotting the landscape. The campground features single-family campsites and one double site, each equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring, and grill. A large group site can accommodate up to 125 people with multiple large picnic tables, a serving table, tent pads, and a gravel parking area. During the main season, vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Roads and parking spurs are gravel. The campground operates on a mixed system with both reservable sites and first-come, first-served sites available. Mill Creek offers excellent cutthroat and rainbow trout fishing right from the campground. Numerous trails begin nearby, including the 12-mile multi-use Summit Trail which connects with Farmers Canyon, East Elkhorn, and Wright Creek trails. Old Canyon and South Canyon trails are a short distance from the campground. The area is popular for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicle riding on designated trails. The campground is managed by Pinnacle Parks LLC under special use permit with the Forest Service.
