About

Malad Summit Guard Station is a historic one-room cabin nestled in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest at 6,000 feet elevation, 14 miles north of Malad, Idaho on Malad Pass just off I-15. The cabin sits in a forested setting of deciduous and conifer trees in the narrow Mill Creek Drainage, offering a secluded retreat on fenced acreage surrounded by scenic high country views. Mill Creek meanders through the site, providing fishing opportunities for small brook trout. The original guard station was established in 1908 but was replaced by the existing cabin in 1934. The cabin sleeps six on three bunkbeds with mattresses. Interior amenities include a wood stove, space heater, lights, induction stove, table with four chairs, cook prep area, and sink. Outside features include a vault toilet, campfire ring, grill, lantern post, and picnic tables. Potable water is available from May through late September, but is shut off during winter months. The cabin is accessible by car when there is no snow. In winter, Forest Road 041 is not maintained or plowed, and guests must ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile approximately half a mile from the plowed road to reach the cabin. The surrounding area offers trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and OHV use. Wildlife including black bears, elk, moose, mule deer, and mountain lions are native to the area.

Directions

From I-15, take Exit 22 (Devil Creek Reservoir). Go north on N. Old Highway 191 for 3.5 miles. Turn left on E11000N/Forest Road 041 and cross over the interstate, drive 1.3 miles. At the bend keep right and continue on Forest Road 041 for another mile. At the forest boundary there will be a Malad Summit Cabin sign and entrance gate. The cabin is located a few hundred feet past the entrance gate.
