About

Trout Creek Guard Station is a historic red cabin nestled at the edge of a scenic meadow just above Trout Creek in Ashley National Forest. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, it originally served as a residence for forest rangers who patrolled the area on horseback. The Ashley National Forest now rents this guard station to the public for a primitive backcountry experience. The cabin features two twin-sized bunk beds sleeping up to 4 people inside, with room for up to 8 additional guests camping outside (maximum 12 total). Inside amenities include a wood-burning stove for heat, a propane stove and oven for cooking, a refrigerator (operational June through mid-September only), sink, table, and chairs. Basic cookware is provided but guests should bring their own supplies. A vault toilet is located outside, along with a campfire ring and grill. Summer access from June 1 through October 31 is via gravel Forest Road 020. Winter access from December through March requires snowmobile travel. The surrounding area offers extensive hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, wildlife viewing, and scenic driving opportunities, with trails leading to Oaks Park, East Park, and Long Park Reservoirs.

Directions

From Vernal, travel north on U.S. Highway 191 for approximately 20 miles. Turn left (west) on Forest Road 020/018. Follow paved Forest Road 020 northwest approximately 9 miles.
