About

Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground offers a unique backcountry camping experience on the shores of beautiful Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Located 2 miles from the nearest road and accessible only by boat or hiking trail, this remote campground sits at 6,040 feet elevation, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and forested with pinyon pine and juniper trees that provide limited shade. The campground's name comes from its historical use as a hiding spot by the infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy and his gang. The campground features 18 single-family sites, each equipped with a cabana, picnic table, and fire ring with grate. Flush toilets and water hydrants are provided during the operating season, with a vault toilet available for off-season use. The gravel trails from the boat docks to the campsites are steep and change annually based on water level fluctuations. Most sites afford partial views of the reservoir. Boating, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, and swimming are popular activities right from the campground. Most visitors access the site by boat from Sheep Creek Bay Boat Ramp. Hikers can access the campground via the Hideout/Carter Creek Trailhead on Dowd Mountain off Forest Road 094. Lucerne Valley Marina is located a few miles away by boat, offering gas, boat slips, fishing licenses, bait, and groceries. The path from the boat dock does not meet accessibility standards, and some visitors may require assistance navigating the steep terrain.

Directions

From Manila, Utah: Take State Route 44 southeast for 7 miles. Turn northeast onto Forest Road 092, and continue to Sheep Creek Bay Boat Ramp. Once on the water, travel 2 miles southeast to reach the campground. Hikers should use the Hideout/Carter Creek Trailhead on Dowd Mountain off Forest Road 094.
