About

Townsend Recreation Area is a primitive campground situated on the shores of Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the largest man-made lake entirely within Texas. Located in Angelina National Forest in the heart of east Texas, this small campground offers an affordable and rustic camping experience for those seeking direct access to the 114,000-acre reservoir. The campground features approximately 10 primitive, non-electric campsites suitable for tent camping, along with a boat ramp providing direct access to Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The reservoir is nationally renowned for its largemouth bass fishery and hosts numerous fishing tournaments throughout the year. The surrounding Angelina National Forest encompasses 153,179 acres of piney woods and provides habitat for diverse wildlife, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Townsend operates on a first-come, first-served basis at $3 per night, making it one of the most budget-friendly camping options on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Campers should come prepared with their own drinking water and supplies, as the campground offers only basic amenities including portable toilets, picnic tables, and parking. Payment is typically by cash or check, though scan-and-pay options via the Recreation.gov mobile app may be available on-site.
