About
Hanks Creek Park is a well-equipped U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground located on the northwest shore of Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the largest man-made lake completely within Texas. The park features 47 campsites with electric hookups (both 30 and 50 amp service), along with water hookups at most sites. Amenities include hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, boat ramp, playground, group camping areas, and overnight shelters. Sam Rayburn Reservoir boasts over 114,000 surface acres of water, providing exceptional fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish. The lake hosts frequent fishing tournaments and is popular for jet skiing, water skiing, and swimming. The reservoir is surrounded by the Angelina National Forest, with the Sabine and Davy Crockett National Forests nearby, offering additional recreational opportunities. The area is home to the endangered Red-cockaded woodpecker, which nests in cavities pecked into large, living pine trees throughout the surrounding forest. Mountain biking trails, volleyball courts, and wildlife viewing opportunities provide activities for those who prefer to stay on land. The nearby 20,700-acre Bannister Wildlife Management Area on the northern peninsula serves as a designated Eastern Wild Turkey restoration site with additional hiking and biking opportunities.
