About
Located deep in the Angelina National Forest near Zavalla, Bouton Lake Campground offers one of East Texas's best-kept secrets for primitive camping enthusiasts. This free, first-come, first-served campground features approximately 9-11 undeveloped campsites situated among beautiful bottomland hardwoods and bald cypress trees along the eastern shore of Bouton Lake. The campground provides a truly rustic experience with no facilities—no restrooms, no potable water, and no trash service. Campers must be self-sufficient and pack out all trash. The lake offers opportunities for fishing and non-motorized boating in a peaceful, secluded environment. Hikers can access the 5.5-mile Sawmill Hiking Trail, which connects Bouton Lake with Boykin Springs Recreation Area and includes a spur trail to the historic Aldridge Sawmill site. Visitors should note that the western half of Bouton Lake is privately owned, and trespassing is strictly forbidden. The campground is accessed via Forest Road 303, a well-maintained dirt road, though the area's remote location and one-lane access roads require careful navigation. This primitive setting attracts those seeking solitude and a true backcountry camping experience in the East Texas piney woods.
Directions
From Zavalla, follow Highway 63 east for 7 miles. Turn right (south) on Forest Road 303 and continue for 7 miles to Bouton Lake.
