About
Letney Recreation Area was once a US Forest Service campground located on Sam Rayburn Reservoir within the Angelina National Forest in Jasper County, Texas. Historical documentation from 1967 shows it operated as a camping unit during the development of recreation facilities around the 114,000-acre reservoir. Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the largest lake entirely within Texas boundaries, is situated in the heart of East Texas Piney Woods and is managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers with surrounding land managed by the USFS. While several other recreation areas around Sam Rayburn remain operational today, Letney no longer appears in current USFS campground inventories or reservation systems and is presumed closed or decommissioned.
Directions
From Jasper, Texas, head north on US-96 for approximately 10 miles. Turn left onto FM 255 and continue for about 5 miles. The entrance to Letney Recreation Site will be on your right.
