About
Caney Creek Recreation Area is a primitive lakeside campground situated on the shores of Sam Rayburn Reservoir within Angelina National Forest in East Texas. The 114,000-acre reservoir provides excellent opportunities for fishing and boating, with a boat ramp on site for water access. The campground features 26 designated tent camping sites, each equipped with a tent pad, picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. This is a true primitive camping experience. There is no potable water available, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground operates on a pack-it-in, pack-it-out basis with no trash service provided. Two vault toilets are located at the boat ramp parking lot. Camping is first-come, first-served only; no advance reservations are accepted. Payment of $6 per night can be made via cash, check, or the Recreation.gov Scan and Pay mobile app. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet or otherwise under physical control. They are prohibited in swimming areas except for service animals. The campground is located about 6 miles east of Zavalla via Highway 63, then 6 miles on FM 2743, and 1 mile on Forest Service Road 336.
