About

Timber Camp Campground is a remote, primitive camping area situated in the West Absaroka Mountains on the Gardiner Ranger District of Custer Gallatin National Forest. Located approximately 9 miles northeast of Gardiner via Jardine Road and Bear Creek Road (Forest Road 493), this small campground offers 3 sites in a quiet, undeveloped setting. The campground is designed for self-sufficient campers who appreciate solitude and minimal amenities. Two horse corrals are available just past the campground, making it a suitable base for equestrian activities. The area provides opportunities for day hiking and viewing native plants in the surrounding West Absaroka landscape. Campers must bring all necessary supplies including water, as no potable water or restrooms are provided on-site. The access road is primitive and best suited for tent campers and high-clearance vehicles. Operating seasonally from June through October depending on weather and road conditions, Timber Camp attracts visitors seeking an authentic backcountry experience near Yellowstone National Park without reservation requirements or developed facilities.
