About
Mill Creek Cabin was built in 1927 as temporary lodging for traveling Forest Service personnel and now serves as a recreation rental on the Yellowstone Ranger District. The 20-by-14 log structure sits at 5,750 feet elevation at the edge of a meadow with views of evergreens and bubbling Mill Creek, a tributary of the Yellowstone River. The cabin features a front porch with picnic table and benches, plus a back porch overlooking the creek. Inside, the cabin offers bunk beds with mattresses for up to four guests, a wood-burning stove for heat, electric range, electric lights, and a table with chairs. Running water is available mid-June through mid-September; otherwise guests must bring their own drinking water. An outdoor vault toilet and campfire ring are provided. Stock facilities include a corral with 4-horse capacity and summer water access. The area offers excellent hiking and horseback access to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, fishing for Yellowstone cutthroat trout in Mill Creek, and seasonal huckleberry picking. Winter recreation includes cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on the Mill Creek Snowmobile Trail, with access to Snowbank and Passage Creek Falls ski trails.
Directions
From Livingston, travel south on Highway 89 for approximately 15 miles. Turn left (east) on Mill Creek Road 486. Continue approximately 12 miles along a paved then gravel road. The cabin (marked as Mill Creek Work Center) is on the right, just before Snowbank Campground. In winter, the road is plowed to the Snowbank snowmobile parking area beyond the cabin.
