About
Mill Creek Cabin is a historic Forest Service rental cabin built in 1927 that once served as temporary lodging for traveling Forest Service personnel. Located at 5,750 feet elevation in the Absaroka Mountains, the cabin sits at the edge of a meadow with a stand of evergreens behind it and Mill Creek flowing past the back porch. The rustic cabin can accommodate up to 4 guests with sleeping platforms and mattresses (guests must bring bedding), and features a wood heat stove, electric stove, and electric lights. Water is available via hand pump in summer, otherwise from the creek. The cabin offers easy access to outdoor recreation in all seasons. Hikers and equestrians can access trailheads leading into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Mill Creek provides fishing opportunities for Yellowstone cutthroat trout, and huckleberry-picking is popular when in season. Winter recreation includes cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on the Mill Creek Snowmobile Trail, with easy access to the Snowbank and Passage Creek Falls ski trails. A corral for up to 4 horses is available. The cabin is accessible by vehicle year-round via paved then gravel Mill Creek Road, though four-wheel drive is recommended. In winter, the road is plowed to the Snowbank snowmobile parking area adjacent to the cabin. Wildlife in the area includes deer, elk, black bears, bald eagles, owls, jays, western meadowlarks, and mountain bluebirds. The cabin is located just before Snowbank Campground, approximately 27 miles southeast of Livingston.
Directions
From Livingston, travel south on Highway 89 for approximately 15 miles. Turn left (east) on Mill Creek Road 486 for 12 miles. The cabin will be on the right, just before Snowbank Campground.
