About

Mammoth Campground is Yellowstone National Park's only year-round campground, situated at 6,200 feet elevation in the Mammoth Hot Springs area, just five miles south of the North Entrance near Gardiner, Montana. The campground offers 85 sites set in a high sagebrush steppe environment with scattered juniper and Douglas fir trees providing shade during summer months. The campground's location in the northern section of the park provides exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. Elk, bison, pronghorn, and mule deer frequently pass through the area depending on the season, and elk are particularly common around Mammoth Hot Springs. The campground sits within walking distance of the famous Mammoth Hot Springs terraces, where visitors can explore boardwalks above steaming hydrothermal features and vibrant travertine formations. The historic Fort Yellowstone area is also nearby. Recreational opportunities abound in the area, including hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The road from the North Entrance winds through the Gardner River canyon past sandstone cliffs and ancient mudflows, with diverse vegetation including Rocky Mountain juniper, cottonwood, Douglas-fir, and willows along the river. Birds such as eagles, osprey, dippers, and kingfishers inhabit the canyon, while bighorn sheep can be spotted on steeper terrain. During winter, visitors can ski or snowshoe among the Upper Terraces' hydrothermal features.
