About

Thumb Butte Group Picnic Area is a day-use facility located approximately 4 miles west of Prescott in the Prescott National Forest. Set in a ponderosa pine forest at 5,700 feet elevation at the base of the Thumb Butte rock formation and adjacent to Miller Creek, the site provides a convenient location for groups to enjoy outdoor gatherings. The facility offers year-round pavilions that can accommodate groups of up to 100 people, making it suitable for luncheons, church gatherings, family picnics, and other large functions. Amenities include flush toilets, potable water, electric outlets (20 amp maximum), area lighting after dark, paved pathways and parking, horseshoe pits (bring your own horseshoes), picnic tables, pedestal grills, and garbage service. A $5 per vehicle per day fee applies, with passes available and free admission every Wednesday. The Thumb Butte area is popular for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and horseback riding. Multiple trails are accessible from the picnic area, including two that ascend Thumb Butte. The ponderosa pine forest is home to diverse wildlife including deer, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, and various bird species. Summer temperatures are pleasant, while winter brings cool to cold conditions with occasional snow. This is a day-use only facility; overnight camping is not permitted.

Directions

From Prescott, take Gurley Street west which becomes Thumb Butte Road, and travel 2.2 miles to the picnic area entrance on the right. From Phoenix, take I-17 north to Exit 262 onto Highway 69 North toward Prescott for 41 miles. Highway 69 becomes Gurley Street in Prescott, which then becomes Thumb Butte Road.
