Groom Creek Horse Camp Now Has Water!

The water system is back up and running at Groom Creek Horse Camp.  Campers no longer need to worry about bringing their own drinking water!

About

Lower Wolf Creek Campground is a historic 20-site campground constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s, located along Wolf Creek in the Groom Creek area of Prescott National Forest. The campground showcases remarkable CCC stonework including rock walls, steps, and a check-in station featuring a historic Forest Service logo carved in stone. The sites are situated among a diverse mix of ponderosa pines, Arizona walnuts, and live oaks, with large boulders scattered throughout. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill. Vault toilets and garbage service are provided, but campers must bring their own drinking water as none is available on site. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a self-service fee station. Access requires travel on unpaved Forest Road 97, which is suitable for all vehicles in dry conditions. The Wolf Creek Loop Trail is accessible nearby for hiking.

Directions

From Prescott, take the Senator Highway (Mt. Vernon Avenue) south for about 6 miles, passing Goldwater Lake and the community of Groom Creek. The pavement ends about 500 feet before Forest Road 97. Turn right onto FR 97 and travel 1.25 miles to the campground on the left. Alternate route: From Prescott, take US Highway 89 (White Spar Road) south for about 6 miles to Forest Road 97, then turn left and go 5.1 miles on graded dirt road to the campground.
