About
Lower Wolf Creek Campground is a historic gem nestled along the banks of Wolf Creek in Prescott National Forest, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s. The campground showcases impressive CCC-era stonework, including rock walls, steps, and a historic check-in station featuring the vintage Forest Service logo. The 20 spacious campsites are scattered among ponderosa pines, Arizona walnut, and live oaks in a distinctive boulder-strewn landscape that reflects the area's geological character. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill. The campground provides vault toilets and garbage service, but campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis during select holiday weekends only, offering a peaceful retreat with moderate use levels. Access requires 1.25 to 5 miles of unpaved road travel depending on the route chosen, with Forest Road 97 suitable for all vehicles during dry conditions. The campground's historic character, combined with its creekside setting and proximity to Prescott, makes it an attractive destination for those seeking a short getaway in a well-established forest setting. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed, and the standard 14-day stay limit within any 30-day period applies across the Prescott National Forest.
Directions
From Prescott, take Senator Highway (Mt. Vernon Avenue) south for about 6 miles past Goldwater Lake and Groom Creek. Turn right onto Forest Road 97 (unpaved) and travel 1.25 miles to the campground. Alternate route: Take U.S. Highway 89 (White Spar Road) south 6 miles to Forest Road 97, turn left and travel 5.1 miles on graded dirt road. Unpaved road travel ranges from 1.25 to 5 miles depending on route.
