About

The Pines Campground is a rustic, no-fee campground located in a wooded setting adjacent to Barbour's Creek, a stocked trout stream popular with anglers. Situated at 2,100 feet elevation in the Barbour's Creek valley under tall ridges, the campground is surrounded by oaks, hickories, and pines. Most campsites are designed for tents, but small recreation vehicles can be accommodated. The campground provides vault toilets but no potable water, so campers must bring their own drinking water. This primitive setting offers a peaceful escape with access to fishing and day hiking. Jeep enthusiasts will find some of Virginia's most challenging 4-wheeling at the nearby Potts Mountain Jeep Road. The campground operates first-come, first-served with no advance reservations required. Located about 15 miles from New Castle via State Routes 311, 611, and 617, The Pines offers a secluded camping experience with quiet hours enforced from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

Directions

From New Castle: Follow SR 311 north for approximately 4.5 miles. Turn right on SR 611. Follow it for 5 miles and turn left on SR 617. Travel 5.5 miles to the campground entrance on left. Driving distance from New Castle is about 15 miles; estimated time is 30 minutes. From Covington: Take SR 18 to SR 615. Turn left and follow to SR 617; campground is on right.
