About

Craig Creek Recreation Area provides a rustic group camping experience in a scenic narrow valley flanked by Jefferson National Forest. The large open grassy field is perfect for groups that want to tent camp together, with mature shade trees edging the camping area. The highlight of the recreation area is Craig Creek itself, where generations of families have enjoyed the swimming hole and paddling opportunities. The creek is stocked with trout and provides good fishing for anglers, while canoeists can use the area as a convenient put-in or take-out point for easy paddles on the warm waters. A two-mile loop trail within the recreation area offers hiking opportunities. The adjacent day-use area is open from sunrise to sunset but overnight camping is prohibited there. Located 20 minutes from New Castle, Virginia, the recreation area encompasses over 130 acres of pasture and woodland on a peninsula formed by Craig Creek. This is an ideal destination for groups seeking a back-to-basics camping experience with minimal amenities in a beautiful natural setting.
