About
Whispering Pines Campground is located at Douthat State Park in the George Washington National Forest, offering a peaceful camping experience along a scenic creek. The campground features 23 well-spaced sites on gravel pads, designed to accommodate both RVs up to 50 feet and tents. Each site includes water and electric hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, picnic tables, and fire rings. The modern bathhouse provides flush toilets, hot showers, and a slop kitchen for camper convenience. The campground is positioned at the southern end of Douthat State Park, approximately three miles from the main park entrance and facilities. A creek runs between the local road and the campground, providing a natural buffer and scenic backdrop. Campers have direct access to several hiking and biking trails from the campground, and a playground with fitness area is located on-site. While Whispering Pines is the furthest campground from Douthat Lake and the main park amenities, it offers a quieter, more secluded camping experience. As the only year-round campground at Douthat State Park, Whispering Pines provides a unique opportunity for winter camping, though water at individual campsites is turned off from November through March due to freezing temperatures. The campground includes a dump station and one universally accessible site. Reservations are strongly recommended as sites typically book quickly, especially during peak seasons.
Directions
From I-64, take Exit 27 in Clifton Forge. Turn north onto SR 629 and travel approximately 3 miles to the park entrance.
