Whispering Pines Campground sits within Douthat State Park, one of Virginia's original six state parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The campground occupies a peaceful setting along a creek in the Alleghany Highlands, with mature trees providing shade throughout the 23 sites. Each gravel-pad site offers water and electric hookups (30 and 50-amp), a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and lantern post. The campground is the only area at Douthat that remains open year-round, making it popular for off-season campers. From November through March, water is shut off at individual sites due to freezing temperatures, though the bathhouse remains operational. A dump station is available on-site, and the nearby camp store stocks limited groceries, snacks, and camping supplies. Guest Wi-Fi is accessible at the camp store and park office. Douthat's 4,545 acres offer over 40 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, plus a 50-acre lake for fishing and swimming. The park rents boats and has a beach area open seasonally. Reservations are site-specific and available through Virginia State Parks, opening 11 months in advance.

From I-64, take exit 27 (Clifton Forge). Follow Route 629 north for approximately 5 miles to the park entrance. Whispering Pines Campground is located within Douthat State Park.
