About

Scotts Gulf Wilderness State Park, Tennessee's 60th state park, protects one of the most scenic and rugged landscapes on the Cumberland Plateau. The park encompasses the dramatic Scotts Gulf gorge along the Caney Fork River, featuring waterfalls, caves, and striking geological formations. The 14 primitive backcountry campsites are spread across four areas offering varying experiences and distances from the trailhead. Virgin Falls Campground sits 4.3 miles from the trailhead, requiring a strenuous hike through the gorge. Cable Crossing Campground is closer at 1.5 miles, positioned near Big Laurel Creek. Martha's Pretty Point Campground lies 2.1 miles in via the Upland Trail and features metal fire rings with grill attachments. Caney Fork Campground offers sites along the river. All camping is primitive with no potable water, electricity, or restroom facilities. Backpackers must be self-sufficient, treating any water collected from creeks and packing out all waste. The challenging terrain and lack of amenities make this park best suited for experienced backpackers seeking a wilderness experience within reach of Middle Tennessee.
