About

Savage Gulf is Tennessee's largest natural area, encompassing over 15,000 acres of rugged gorges, waterfalls, and plateau forests within the South Cumberland Recreation Area. The park offers 10 backcountry campgrounds: Stone Door, Savage Station, Savage Falls, Hobbs, Dinky Line, Stagecoach Road, Collin West, Alum Gap, Sawmill, and Meadow Creek. Each campground features primitive sites with fire rings. Stone Door Campground and Savage Station Campground are the most accessible, located just a few hundred yards from overnight parking lots and offering potable water at the entrance and pit toilets. Sawmill Campground also has potable water. Other backcountry campgrounds require longer hikes and water must be filtered from natural sources or packed in. The park requires permits for all backcountry hiking, and reservations are mandatory for camping through the Tennessee State Parks reservation system. Certified heat-treated firewood is required, and hiking after dark is prohibited. The iconic Stone Door, a 10-foot-wide crevice in the bluff line, serves as a historic passage from the plateau to the gorge below.
