About
Savage Gulf State Park, Tennessee's newest state park established in 2022, encompasses nearly 19,000 acres of rugged wilderness on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau. The park offers backcountry camping at 10 designated campgrounds scattered throughout its 50+ miles of hiking trails. With 66 individual campsites, 9 group sites, and the historic Hobbs Cabin, all camping requires advance reservations and hiking to reach your site. The campgrounds vary significantly in accessibility and amenities. Stone Door and Savage Station campgrounds sit just a few hundred yards from parking areas and provide potable water at the campground entrance, making them ideal for beginners or those with heavy gear. Other campgrounds like Hobbs Cabin require an 8.5-mile hike and rely on seasonal springs that may run dry. Sawmill Campground has reliable water from Schwoon Spring, while Savage Falls Campground offers water from the falls. Each campground includes designated fire areas and pit toilets. The newest addition, Meadow Creek Campground, sits 5.3 miles from the East Entrance along the North Plateau Trail. Most sites accommodate up to six people, with group sites available at several campgrounds holding 30 to 60 people. The primitive Hobbs Cabin features six wood bunks, a wood-burning fireplace, and prohibits tent or hammock camping nearby. Campers should be prepared for true backcountry conditions, carry adequate water or filtration systems, and check with rangers about current water availability before departure.
