About
Cumberland Mountain State Park sits on 1,720 acres of the Cumberland Plateau, established in 1938 as part of the New Deal-era Cumberland Homesteads Project. The campground offers 145 sites across five distinct areas, with Area 1 providing full hookups (electric, water, sewer) and remaining open year-round. Areas 2-5 offer electric and water hookups and operate seasonally from mid-April through October or November.
Each camping area has its own bathhouse with hot showers and restrooms, with ADA-accessible sites and facilities available in Areas 1, 2, 3, and 5. Sites include picnic tables and grills. A centralized camp store and dump station serve the campground. The park's Byrd Lake offers fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish, plus opportunities for canoeing and kayaking (permit required).
Beyond camping, the park features over 15 miles of hiking trails, an 18-hole golf course at Bear Trace, a swimming pool (seasonal), and historic CCC-built stone structures. The location provides easy access from I-40 while offering a quiet retreat in the Cumberland Plateau's hardwood forests.
