Crooked River Primitive Campsites are two isolated, primitive camping spots nestled along Crooked River within the vast Tate's Hell State Forest. Site #44 and Site #45 are located in separate areas off Duval Road, each offering a secluded experience for tent or RV campers seeking solitude in the Florida Panhandle wilderness. Both sites include a picnic table, fire ring, and grill, but campers must be fully self-sufficient as there is no electricity, potable water, or restroom facilities. Tate's Hell State Forest spans over 202,000 acres between the Apalachicola and Ochlockonee rivers in Franklin and Liberty counties. The forest features 35 miles of rivers, streams, and creeks ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing (valid Florida license required). Hikers can access portions of the Florida Scenic Trail that traverse the forest, while birders will find the area is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. The diverse ecosystems include cypress and titi swamps, blackwater rivers, and pine flatwoods. Nearby attractions include St. George Island, Carrabelle Lighthouse, Apalachicola National Forest, and the Apalachicola National Estuary Research Reserve. The town of Carrabelle is approximately 8 miles southwest and offers supplies and services.
