About

Located in Tate's Hell State Forest in Franklin County, the Crooked River Primitive Campsites consist of two separate tent or RV-accessible sites situated close to Crooked River, approximately 8 miles northeast of Carrabelle. Each site accommodates up to 8 people and includes a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. These are true primitive campsites with no electricity, water, or restrooms available. Tate's Hell State Forest encompasses over 202,437 acres between the Apalachicola and Ochlockonee rivers, featuring diverse natural communities including wet prairie, wet flatwoods, strand swamp, and bottomland forest. The forest is home to unique dwarf cypress stands, some over 150 years old but only 15 feet tall, which can be viewed from the Ralph G. Kendrick Boardwalk observation tower. Recreational opportunities abound with 35 miles of rivers, streams, and creeks for canoeing, boating, and fishing. The forest is part of the Florida Scenic Trail and Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, making it popular for hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, and photography. Most campsites are located on river banks providing convenient access for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.
