Tate's Hell State Forest New River Primitive Campsites offer a true backcountry camping experience along the scenic New River in Florida's Panhandle. The eight primitive sites are spread across an 11-mile stretch: North Road, New River #8, Gully Branch #2, Dew Drop, Borrow Pit #1, Borrow Pit #2, Parker Place, and Pope Place. All sites are accessible to both tents and RVs, though campers should expect no hookups or developed facilities. Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. There is no potable water, electricity, or restrooms at any of the sites, so campers must be fully self-sufficient. New River #8 has a canoe launch while Pope Place offers a boat launch, making these excellent base camps for paddling and fishing on the New River. The forest is home to alligators, snakes, and diverse wildlife. Recreational opportunities include fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, bird watching, and wildlife photography.
