About
Tamarack Flat Campground is a primitive, reservation-only campground tucked away in the forest off Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park. Located approximately 20 miles from Yosemite Valley and accessed via a challenging 3-mile narrow, single-lane access road, this campground is not recommended for RVs or trailers. At an elevation of 6,300 feet, the campground sits near Tamarack Creek, a seasonal water source that requires filtering, treating, or boiling before consumption. No potable water is provided at the campground. The campground offers 52 reservation-only sites and serves as a quieter alternative to busier valley campgrounds. A hiking trail departs directly from the campground, providing access to Cascade Creek, El Capitan, and other points along Yosemite Valley's North Rim. The campground is located just 5 miles east of Crane Flat on Tioga Road, with a gas station available at Crane Flat. Two giant sequoia groves, Tuolumne and Merced, are within 5-10 miles and accessible via short hikes. Each site includes a food storage locker, fire ring, and picnic table. Five sites (21, 22, 23, 24, and 38) are wheelchair accessible. The campground features seasonal vault toilets and trash collection but no showers or hookups. Maximum occupancy is six people and two vehicles per site. Pets are permitted on leash.
Directions
From Yosemite Valley, take Big Oak Flat Road and Tioga Road northeast for 20 miles (approximately 45 minutes). The Tamarack Flat access road is located 5 miles east of Crane Flat along Tioga Road. Turn onto the access road and drive 3 miles on a narrow, winding single-lane road to reach the campground. From Highway 120 east/Tioga Pass, the turnoff is approximately 42 miles west. RVs and trailers are not recommended due to the difficult access road.
