About
Tamarack Flat Campground sits at 6,300 feet elevation in a quiet forest setting east of Crane Flat in Yosemite National Park. The campground is intentionally primitive, offering an escape from the busier valley campgrounds. Access requires navigating a 3-mile narrow, single-lane road with hairpin turns, making this campground unsuitable for RVs and trailers. The campground has 52 sites with vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and bear-proof food storage lockers. There is no potable water; Tamarack Creek is the only water source and must be filtered, treated, or boiled before consumption. A gas station is available nearby at Crane Flat. Hiking trails depart directly from the campground, leading to Cascade Creek, El Capitan, and other points along the North Rim of Yosemite Valley. The Tuolumne and Merced Groves of giant sequoias are 5-10 miles away. Yosemite Valley is approximately 25 miles (45 minutes) by car.
Directions
From Yosemite Valley, take Big Oak Flat Road and Tioga Road 20 miles (approximately 45 minutes). The Tamarack Flat access road is located 4-5 miles east of Crane Flat along Tioga Road. The access road is 3 miles long, narrow, single-lane with hairpin turns. From Highway 120 east/Tioga Pass, the turnoff is approximately 42 miles west (70 minutes).
