About

Camp 4 holds a legendary status in Yosemite National Park as the birthplace of modern American rock climbing. Located at 4,000 feet elevation in Yosemite Valley, this walk-in campground sits near the base of iconic granite walls and within walking distance of Yosemite Falls. The campground's unique shared-site system assigns up to six individuals per site, creating a communal atmosphere that has fostered climbing partnerships and friendships for generations. The campground features 61 tent-only sites, though only 25 are open during winter months. Each site includes shared picnic tables, bear-proof food storage lockers (35"D x 43"W x 28"H), and fire rings. Vehicles are never permitted inside the campground; parking is located 100-300 yards away. The sites are mostly level with shade provided by California black oak, ponderosa pine, incense-cedar, and white fir. Camp 4's walk-in nature and proximity to world-class climbing routes on El Capitan and other formations make it a pilgrimage site for climbers from around the globe. The campground sits within easy biking or walking distance of Yosemite Valley Lodge and Yosemite Village, offering convenient access to food services, groceries, and the free Valley shuttle. Restrooms with flush toilets and potable water are centrally located within the campground. Due to its shared sites and close proximity of campsites, Camp 4 is not a quiet campground. The social atmosphere and community spirit are part of its charm, though those seeking solitude may prefer other campgrounds. The Merced River flows nearby, and the campground provides access to Yosemite's extensive trail system, from easy valley walks to challenging backcountry routes.
