About
Tailwater Picnic Shelter is a reservable picnic facility located within the Tailwater Recreation Area at Green River Lake in central Kentucky. The shelter sits just 0.3 miles off KY-55, with the Tailwater boat ramp and Green River access located only a few hundred feet away. This location marks the beginning of the downstream portion of the Green River, one of the most biodiverse rivers in the country, home to more than 150 fish species, 70 mussel species, and 42 endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The shelter provides an ideal base for enjoying Green River Lake's 8,000 surface acres of water, perfect for boating, fishing, jet skiing, and wakeboarding. Kayaking and canoeing down the Green River from the nearby Tailwater boat ramp is a particularly popular activity. Anglers can target walleye, crappie, white bass, channel catfish, muskie, and bluegill. Miles of scenic trails wind around the lake, and the Corps of Engineers Visitor Center and Historical Civil War Atkinson-Griffin Log Cabin are located just 2 miles away. Green River Lake State Park is 3.4 miles from the shelter, with Mammoth Cave National Park and Abraham Lincoln's birthplace within an hour's drive.
Directions
From Campbellsville: Head southwest on E Broadway St toward Lebanon Ave. Continue onto US-68 W/Greensburg Rd, then turn left onto KY-55 S for 7.6 miles. Turn left towards the Tailwater Recreation Area, then right towards the Tailwater Shelter.
