About
Tahoe State Recreation Area is a small, historic campground situated in Tahoe City along Highway 28, offering convenient access to Lake Tahoe and nearby shopping and dining. The campground features 23 sites divided between Lakeside and Hillside loops, with the Hillside loop located across Highway 28 from both the Lakeside loop and Lake Tahoe. Sites are nestled among groves of Ponderosa and Jeffrey pines, providing picturesque views of the lake. This is an urban campground with small turns and limited parking pads, making it best suited for tent camping and smaller RVs or trailers. Each campsite includes a picnic table, fire pit, and required-use bear-resistant food storage locker. Restrooms with showers and drinking water are available for registered campers. The campground does not offer hookups or dump stations. A scenic bike path leads from the campground into Tahoe City. The location is ideal for visitors who want to be close to town amenities while still enjoying a camping experience. Black bears are very active in the area, and strict food storage regulations are enforced. Due to its proximity to Highway 28, the campground can be noisy, and earplugs are recommended. Sugar Pine Point State Park, located 11 miles south on Highway 89, is suggested for those seeking more secluded campsites.
