About
Taconic State Park's Copake Falls area spans over 5,000 acres along the Taconic Mountain Range, sharing an 11-mile border with Massachusetts and Connecticut. As the oldest state park in the Taconic Region, it offers diverse camping experiences from rustic ground sites to platform tent sites and approximately 30 sites accommodating trailers up to 26 feet. The campground features three cabin areas: Bash Bish cabins with centrally located facilities, Ironworkers cabins with private showers and flush toilets, and Greenwich cabins including wheelchair-accessible units with full amenities like microwaves, dishwashers, and cable TV hookups. All cabins include electricity, running water, refrigerators, stoves, picnic tables, and fire rings with grills. The park provides exceptional recreation year-round. Hike to Bash Bish Falls, the highest single-drop waterfall in Massachusetts, or climb Brace Mountain, Dutchess County's highest point. The Harlem Valley Rail Trail offers scenic biking and roller blading along a former New York City rail extension. Swimming is available at the Ore Pit Pond, a small but deep former iron ore mine pit with excellent water quality and a designated swimming area with lifeguards during season. The adjacent kiddie pool provides options for younger swimmers. Anglers can catch brown trout in Bash Bish Brook or rainbow trout in the ore pit. The Copake Iron Works Museum, established in 1845, preserves the site's industrial heritage with original structures including the charcoal blast furnace and blowing engine house. Winter activities include 5 miles of snowmobile trails plus extensive cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. Hunting is permitted for deer, bear, turkey, squirrel, fox, and ruffed grouse, with the park spanning both Columbia County (rifle permitted) and Dutchess County (shotgun only) regulations. The park remains open year-round for day use from sunrise to sunset, weather permitting.
