About
Stretching along a narrow spit of land between the Gulf of Mexico and St. Joseph Bay, this state park occupies one of the most spectacular coastal settings in Florida's Panhandle. The peninsula's unique geography creates two distinct shorelines: the Gulf side with rolling dunes and powerful surf, and the bay side with calm, shallow waters ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding. Nine miles of undeveloped beaches consistently rank among the nation's best. The Shady Pines Campground sits beneath a canopy of slash pines with 36 standard sites and 10 tent-only sites, all equipped with water, electric, picnic tables, fire rings, and in-ground grills. Two modern air-conditioned bathhouses provide flush toilets and hot showers. RV sites include sewer connections. For those seeking solitude, 14 primitive campsites in the Wilderness Preserve require a 3-mile hike or paddle to reach. Beyond camping, the park offers exceptional fishing in both Gulf and bay waters, snorkeling along the jetties, and hiking trails through maritime hammock and coastal scrub habitats. The bay side provides some of the best scalloping grounds in Florida during season. Kayakers can explore sea grass beds teeming with rays, seahorses, and juvenile fish.
