About
Camel Lake Recreation Area provides a quiet place to relax and take in the beauty of the longleaf pine forest. The campground features 10 well-shaded sites above the lake's rim, all suitable for RVs or tents. Four sites offer electric hookups with 30/50 amp service. The crystal-clear waters of Camel Lake are one of the few such lakes in the Apalachicola National Forest, offering excellent swimming at a sandy beach. Electric trolling motors and paddle boats are permitted on the lake, but no motor boats are allowed. The Apalachicola National Forest is one of the most biodiverse places in the world, and Camel Lake places visitors in the middle of this natural treasure. Tall longleaf pines and wiregrass dominate the landscape, while seepage slopes create pitcher plant bogs. A short loop trail surrounds the lake, with longer loops possible by connecting to the nearby Florida National Scenic Trail, which passes through the area heading west to Memory Island. The day-use area includes picnic tables, a picnic shelter, and accessible facilities. A campground host is always on-site. Bears and other wildlife frequent the area, so proper food storage is required.
Directions
Take SR 20 west from Tallahassee through Hosford to Bristol. Turn south on SR 12. Continue south to the Apalachicola National Forest boundary sign and look for a sign for Camel Lake soon after you pass the work station and trailhead on the left. Turn left on Forest Road 105, which is an unpaved road. Drive 2 miles to the recreation area entrance on the right.
