About

Hickory Landing Campground sits in a scenic cypress forest along Owl Creek in Florida's Apalachicola National Forest, about 25 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico in an area known as the Forgotten Coast. The 10 primitive campsites offer a quiet retreat for tent and RV campers seeking solitude in one of the largest national forests in the eastern United States. The campground serves as a primary access point for paddling Owl Creek, which becomes wide and navigable below the landing and extends several miles upstream before becoming impassable. The full-day paddle from Cotton Landing on Kennedy Creek to Hickory Landing via the Apalachicola River is a regional favorite. A free boat ramp with ample trailer parking makes launching easy. Beyond paddling, visitors enjoy excellent birding opportunities and access to nearby pitcher plant bogs that bloom spectacularly in March and April. The 4.6-mile Wright Lake Trail loop is accessible from the area. Hunters frequent the forest during season, though the campground remains open to all campers year-round.

Directions

From Sumatra, travel south on SR 65 approximately 2 miles. Turn west onto Forest Road 101, then turn left (south) on Forest Road 101B and continue one mile to the campground entrance.
