About

The Sumatra Primitive Campsite is situated in Tate's Hell State Forest in Liberty County, approximately 10 miles east of Sumatra via dirt forest roads. This primitive campsite accommodates both tents and RVs along the New River, providing excellent access for paddling and fishing activities. The site is part of the expansive 202,437-acre Tate's Hell State Forest, which features diverse habitats including wet prairies, strand swamps, and bottomland forests between the Apalachicola and Ochlockonee rivers. The campground offers basic amenities with each site featuring a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. No water, electricity, or restrooms are available on-site, making this a true primitive camping experience. Access is via dirt roads that can become challenging during extreme weather conditions. The location provides opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, bird watching, and wildlife viewing. The New River offers excellent paddling opportunities with small boat access directly from the campsite area. The forest is also part of the Florida Scenic Trail and Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail systems, offering additional recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts willing to venture into this remote corner of the Panhandle.
