Tate's Hell State Forest Sumatra Primitive Campsites

Closed

The campground is currently closed. Normally operates year-round with reservations available up to 11 months in advance. Dirt road access is subject to closure during extreme weather conditions.

About

Tate's Hell State Forest Sumatra Primitive Campsites sit at the end of a network of dirt forest roads approximately 10 miles east of the small community of Sumatra in Liberty County. The two sites can accommodate tents or RVs up to 48 feet in length, though the primitive dirt road access requires careful planning, especially during wet weather when conditions can become impassable. This is truly backcountry camping with no potable water, restrooms, showers, or hookups available. Each site features a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. The surrounding forest supports diverse wildlife including black bears, and the area offers excellent opportunities for kayaking and canoeing on the New River, fishing, hiking, and bird watching. Cell service is unavailable at the campsite. Campers should arrive fully self-sufficient with all water, supplies, and waste management needs addressed. Pets are allowed at Site 1 but not at the Hunt Camp site (HC1). Burn bans may affect campfire use during drought conditions.

Directions
