Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:09PM EDT by NWS Gray ME

12:09 PM — 10:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures this weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Surry Mountain Lake Beach is a day-use recreation area operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Surry Mountain Dam, one of the oldest flood control dams in New England, built in 1941. Located on the Ashuelot River approximately 6 miles north of Keene, New Hampshire, this facility provides a popular destination for swimming, picnicking, and boating. The recreation area features a 600-foot sandy beach with a designated swimming area, three picnic shelters available for group reservations, picnic tables with grills scattered throughout, a boat ramp for small watercraft, a playground, and restrooms with flush toilets. The lake is limited to 10-horsepower engines on vessels. Additional activities include fishing for bass and stocked trout in the Ashuelot River, hiking on the nature trail, and horseshoe pits. This is strictly a day-use facility with no overnight camping permitted. The area operates Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with walk-in access only on Mondays and Tuesdays. During walk-in days, only portable toilets are available. Group shelter reservations can be made through Recreation.gov.
