Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:09PM EDT by NWS Gray ME

12:09 PM — 10:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures this weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Monadnock HQ Campground sits within Monadnock State Park at the headquarters area, surrounded by thousands of acres of protected highlands beneath the iconic 3,165-foot Mount Monadnock. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1987, the park offers year-round recreational opportunities with the campground operating continuously through all seasons. The facility specializes in youth group camping with 10 group standard sites accommodating 10-30 people, plus a group pavilion for day use. The campground features 10 winter-use tent sites available during the colder months when services are limited. Winter campers must pack in their gear as roads are not plowed. Sites range from 23 to 59 feet in length with both back-in and pull-through configurations. The campground provides flush toilets, pit toilets, drinking water, showers, and fire rings during the peak season from May through October. A camp store and comfort station serve campers during operating seasons. The location provides direct access to Mount Monadnock's extensive trail system, offering year-round hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Pets are not permitted anywhere in the park. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through the New Hampshire State Parks system, with sites becoming available at 8am on weekdays and 9am on weekends. Winter check-in is between 1pm-6pm, with limited cell service throughout the park.
