About
Edward MacDowell Lake is situated in a quiet corner of the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire, just off State Route 101. Named after the famous composer and concert pianist Edward Alexander MacDowell, this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility encompasses 1,194 acres of land and water dedicated to day-use recreation. The 165-acre lake is surrounded by densely forested rolling hills covered with pine, birch, poplar, maple, oak, beech, hemlock and alder trees. Visitors enjoy kayaking and canoeing on the scenic lake via a boat ramp. Fishing is popular for largemouth bass, pickerel, perch and horned pout. A swimming beach is available, though there are no lifeguards on duty. Several hiking trails connect around the lake, including the West Ridge Trail which runs along the entire western edge through surrounding wetlands. Facilities include picnic tables and grills, horseshoe pits, volleyball areas, and two reservable picnic shelters. Wildlife is abundant with white-tailed deer, moose, beaver, fisher, muskrat and otter present. Birders may observe osprey, hawks, owls, great blue herons, woodpeckers, waterfowl and songbirds. The park offers a Junior Ranger Program for children ages 6-12, and the nearby ranger station contains interpretive exhibits.
