About

Juniper Lake Stock Corral is a specialized equestrian camping facility situated in the remote southeastern corner of Lassen Volcanic National Park at 6,800 feet elevation. This rustic facility caters exclusively to visitors traveling with horses, mules, burros, or llamas, offering two adjacent metal corrals with water troughs. The location provides direct access to some of the park's premier backcountry trails, including routes to Horseshoe Lake, Snag Lake, and the Mount Harkness Trail which ascends to a historic fire tower still in use today. Longer trails connect to Butte Lake and Summit Lake, and the Pacific Crest Trail is accessible from Juniper Lake. The facility is truly remote, accessed via six miles of roughly paved road followed by seven miles of rough gravel road, requiring over an hour of travel from the main park road. High-clearance vehicles are recommended. Juniper Lake itself is popular for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming. The surrounding landscape showcases Lassen's volcanic heritage with 300 active volcanic domes and hydrothermal features, while supporting over 700 species of flowering plants and 250 vertebrate species. The Caribou Wilderness area adjoins the park and offers additional stock-friendly trails via the Widow Lake trail. All stock users must obtain backcountry permits from the Juniper Lake Ranger Station and follow park saddle and pack stock regulations.

Directions

From Red Bluff I-5, drive east on State Highway 36 approximately 70 miles to Chester. Turn left at the fire station immediately after crossing Feather River Bridge (watch for National Park Service sign on right) and continue approximately 13 miles following signs to Juniper Lake. The Juniper Lake Stock Corral is located directly behind the Juniper Lake Ranger Station. Turn left towards the Juniper Lake Campground, after passing the ranger station, and make an immediate left into the stock corral area and campsite.
